They are not afraid
What do the following folks have in common?
Terry Wogan, Ronnie Barker, Lee and Herring, Ricky Gervaise, Jimmy Carr, Billy Connolly, Alan Cumming, Douglas Adams, Linda Smith, Griff Rhys-Jones, Alexi Sayle, Warren Mitchell, Jim Sweeney, Nick Frost, Dave Allen, Charlie Chaplin, Stephen Fry, Neil Morrissey, Clement Freud, Bob Monkhouse, and Noel Coward.
Well, they were, or are, all atheists! (However, these are only the ones I was able to find using Google, and by watching TV.) What a tradition of non-religious comedic talent the UK has produced over the last century! And the beauty of our current squadron of chuckle mongers is that they are not afraid to poke fun at religion and religious belief. But unlike their US counterparts they have no qualms in expressing their atheism.
(I'm just getting into this blog thing, so bear with me while I sort it out.)

I have what I call "the Homeric conception of God." That is, the gods are all assholes. If you've read Homer's "Iliad," you'd know what I mean.
I don't like to shamelessly promote myself, but I have written a novel on my blog page, "Sister of Mercy," where the main character, Chantal Rousseau, has a Neo-platonist conception of the universe. That is, she sees everything as eminating from Nothing and returning to Nothing. She is both mystical and atheistic at the same time, sort of like a Theravada Buddhist. She has a gnostic ideal of Christ rather than an orthodox one. You might want to check it out.
SOMAN: I don't even think the biblcal character of Jesus even existed!
However, I would agree the gods are all arseholes, should they exist. I know very little of Buddhism, and what I do know is sketchy at best. I seem to remember there are two main branches: one with the paranormal, and one without -- but neither embrace a god or gods as such.
